Habitat Niagara rated one of Canada’s top charities 2019
MacLean’s magazine recently published the 100 Top-Rated Charities in Canada list as captured by MoneySense’s Charity 100 and Habitat for Humanity Niagara was recognized as one of Canada’s top-rated charities for 2019.
The MoneySense Charity 100 assesses Canadian charities based on two major criteria: finances and transparency and recognizes those that have been identified as being the most transparent and efficient with donations.
“We are very honoured to receive this recognition,” said Mark Carl, Habitat Niagara’s CEO. “I am extremely proud of the amazing work done by all the staff, the Board of Directors and our volunteers. This is really a wonderful accomplishment.”
In 2018, Habitat for Humanity Niagara celebrated its 25th anniversary of providing affordable homeownership opportunities for local families. This year, they have constructed their biggest, single multi-home project to date, building five homes on a single piece of property in Welland.
With the help from the community and businesses Habitat Niagara has constructed stronger futures for 68 families in across the Niagara region. Most importantly, 239 children found greater stability and a brighter future after moving into their new Habitat homes.
Habitat Niagara also received accreditation in May 2018, under Imagine Canada’s national standards program, joining a growing community of more than 230 organizations dedicated to operational excellence.
The Standards Program is a Canada-wide set of shared standards for charities and nonprofits designed to strengthen practices in five fundamental areas: board governance; financial accountability and transparency; fundraising; staff management; and volunteer involvement.
Having achieved the accreditation demonstrates the charity’s commitment to operate at the highest level of accountability and transparency, and in turn, strengthens public confidence.

About Habitat for Humanity Niagara
Habitat Niagara builds decent, and affordable houses, providing no-down-payment, interest-free mortgages to qualifying families who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own homes. Habitat is not a giveaway program in that we provide "a hand up not a hand out.” Established locally in 1993, Habitat Niagara will be constructing its 62nd home in Niagara by the end of this year, serving 68 families over the past 25 years, creating stable and secure housing for 239 children. Habitat for Humanity Niagara also operates a retail outlet – the ReStore – selling donated new and used building materials, hardware, appliances, and home supplies. Revenue from the ReStore supports our overhead costs ensuring that every donated dollar goes directly to building affordable homes for families. The Niagara ReStores are located at 2499 Hwy 20 E, Fonthill, 185 South Service Road, Grimsby, and 150 Bunting Road, St. Catharines.
