Ontario launched its first Family Day on the third Monday of February 2008. This year we celebrate the tenth year of this “family in the community” inspired holiday on February 19, 2018. When Family Day was first initiated a decade ago, many people questioned how necessary the holiday was, and believed it was created due to the lack of statutory holidays over the winter season. Now, after a decade of commemorating the significance of family in the community, we’ve grown to see the value of this holiday.

The Boys and Girls Club of Niagara held its annual Champions for Children Gala this past Friday, recognizing Niagara College and others for their work supporting Niagara’s children. The Champions for Children Award recognizes individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the development and well-being of children and youth in Niagara. Niagara College was recognized for several initiatives.

Candidates get ready to run in 2018 Municipal Election

NIAGARA REGION, ON: It appears that many people are eager to make a change on Regional and local councils across Niagara. Three candidate training sessions, for the October 2018 municipal election, offered by the citizens’ group A Better Niagara (ABN) in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland, are virtually sold out with only a half dozen spots remaining in the Welland session.

​Niagara Region, in collaboration with a host of local partners, launched a new website today to gather community input that will help inform Niagara’s first submission to the Smart Cities Challenge.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services responded to 2,748 emergency calls in 2017.  That was an increase of 119 calls from 2016. Although emergency calls for building fires decreased by 32 from the previous year, Welland Fire reports the fire loss in 2017 totalled $3.7M, which is a $2M increase from 2016.
