Tributes were paid to “a vibrant and engaged citizen” during Welland city council’s meeting Tuesday.

Lori Hayes Root, patron of the arts, volunteer, philanthropist, community activist, community booster and more, received certificates on behalf of the city and federal government and warm words of praise from two of their representatives.

The Rotary Club of Welland is celebrating its 100thyear of Community Service. Since its inception in 1920, the Club has been dedicated in serving the local community. From 1927 through 1942, support was given to the ‘Underprivileged Boy’s Camp at Morgan’s Point’.

Naomie Cesar is on a mission to make a difference - locally here in our community while also supporting the international projects that are near and dear to her heart.

She has been the Owner/Operator of CaribAfrica Specialty Shop in Downtown Welland for the last three years and recently made the decision to close that business to focus her energies on her social purpose work.

The Niagara College Knights are heading into 2019-2020 with a new look. On Wednesday, the College's Athletics and Recreation department revealed a new athletics brand, as they get set to kick-off a new season in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Conference (OCAA).

Niagara Region Public Health is informing residents that Niagara has received its first confirmation of West Nile Virus (WNV) in mosquitoes in 2019. To date, in the Niagara region no human cases have been reported to Public Health.

 

In this 'Introduction to Hiking' series of workshops we will share the many joys of hiking. We will learn how to prepare for a hike; safety issues that might be involved; what to bring on the trail; and the different types of hikes offered by Niagara Bruce Trail Club. Each workshop will begin with a 30 minute presentation and question-and-answer period, followed by a 1.5hr hike. Wear sturdy comfortable walking shoes (if you have them) and clothing appropriate for the weather. Bring water.
