Each year in January the Niagara Workforce Planning Board(NWPB) delivers the Employer One survey. Employer One asks Niagara-based employers to set aside 10 minutes to offer their perspectives on hiring, retirements, and hard-to-fill positions over the previous year. This year, NWPB and Niagara Region Public Health have collaborated to add a new question module on workplace mental health to the survey.

The Niagara Poverty Reduction Network is pleased to announce that Niagara Pallet has become Niagara’s 9th certified Living Wage Employer. Niagara Pallet started in 1993 and is owned by the Vrugteveen family. They are a leading manufacturer, seller and recycler of pallets and shipping materials. Their Smithville-based operations are housed in a 23,000 square foot building with an 18,000 square foot addition opening soon. This is the first phase of a significant expansion plan scheduled over the next five years.

The new City of Welland Council is now in the process of planning a municipal budget that will assist Welland residents and business owners in creating their 2019 plan of action. Second year Business – Sales and Marketing student Lucas Holtvluwer has won a free flight, courtesy of Air Canada, as part of the first round of the three-part Great Canadian Sales Competition (GCSC), open to all Canadian college and university students. The competition is designed to educate students about the possibilities of sales as a career and the importance of sales as a skill-set. In round one of the competition, students submit a 30-90 second sales video pitch about a topic they’re passionate about.

The beginning of the new year has always been a time of reflection. Sometimes we look at the world through children’s eyes and see the toys and presents received.
