Niagara College kicked off its 2015 Spring Convocation Ceremonies on Tuesday, June 15 with the help of two distinguished leaders in the Niagara community – Janet St. Amand, chief executive officer of YMCA Niagara, and Debi Pratt, wine industry leader and public relations specialist.

For the past 7 years the Club has hosted potluck dinners in member’s homes to ‘break bread’ together and to support the education of girls in Afghanistan. The goal, of raising funds to finance the hiring of a teacher for girls, has been repeatedly achieved by members and their dinner guests. Since beginning this project, the Club has supported the hiring of 11 teachers ($700 a teacher for six months salary). 

 

I’m often surprised by what people believe to be true about translation and computer translation programs, the process of translation and what it is translators do in general. I’m not simply a proofreader or a supervisor. As a translator I have to wear many hats. I don’t really mind it because if nothing else, it keeps my job interesting. 

You may recall that the family of Katey Marie Campbell created a fund in her memory in August 2013. We wrote about Katey's struggle living with mental illness in our 2013 annual report. It's now been almost two years since her death and we met with her parents, Wayne and Helga, earlier this year to see how the fund has grown and what can be done to increase the impact. 

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the New Democratic Party representing the Welland Riding. To celebrate this milestone, the Welland Riding Association, alongside MPP Cindy Forster, and MP Malcolm Allen will be co-hosting an anniversary dinner on September 19th, 2015. It would be an honour if you joined us for the festivities.

I’ve been asked a few times now what advice I’d give to someone who was interested in becoming a translator. Here are a few points to consider...

 

On June 3, Niagara College staff, students and the community celebrated the grand opening of its Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus Aboriginal Student Resource Centre. The event marked the opening of the first resource centre for Indigenous students at the College’s NOTL Campus, following in the footsteps of a centre that has been open at the Welland Campus since 1992.
