Last year the Welland Downtown BIA teamed up with the Niagara Catholic District School board to invite local students to fabricate beautiful new bike racks for our Downtown. This project not only enhances our beautification initiatives it's also one of the requirements of become a designated Silver Status cycling community . During a conversation between the students and representatives of the WDBIA it was said 'wouldn’t it be great if the students were able to see this project full circle like a mentorship?' ...and that is when the conversation of 'could it be possible' start.
The Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) have announced the winners of the 2016 BIA National Conference Awards. On Monday April 11th, 2016 at the London Convention Centre the Welland Downtown BIA will be receiving their first OBIAA award for “Award of Distinction” for their submission of Welland Bridge 13. The Award of Distinction is a brand new category, being awarded the first time this year and is meant to recognize those who had excellent submissions. Three new eateries were joined by another 15 new business establishments in the downtown, ranging from quality home furnishings to homemade pet food and treats. Both the established and new businesses have been and will continue to see more colour come into the downtown. The keynote success story and colour highlight is the lighting of Bridge #13. The vision of 2012 came to fruition on July 1st with the new energy efficient LED coloured lighting on the historical structure, not only providing a spectacular sight but having a worldwide reach.
In celebration of JULY 24th being the 157th Anniversary of the City of Welland there will be a light show on the Downtown Welland Bridge immediatley following the Concerts on the Canal MADE IN WELLAND NIGHT Concert at the Merritt Park Amphitheatre.

Since we first launched our myWelland community platform in the Spring of 2014 the Welland Downtown BIA has been an incredible partner of our myWelland.com community platform. The year ahead promises to be an exciting year as the BIA is spearheading a comprehensive new series of initiatives to support the revitilization of the Downtown core. A big part of the plan is the establishment of a Business Development staff position to coordinate the implementation of the strategy. This job is now in the capable hands of social media saavy, Stephanie Hicks. Stephanie has a background in social media, event planning, sales and management, and will be using the breadth of her skills in the months to come.
